Commissioned by the Marrickville Public School cultural committee and the P&C, these poles mark a symbolic cultural fist in the Municipality of Marrickville. The recorded local country name is ‘bulanamming’. In an acknowledgement to the local clan and one of the Cadigal peoples, I’ve sought to honour the school by referencing imagery pertinent to the landscape. These motifs are accompanied by modernised icons speaking of gender, energy, equality and positivity.
The Iron Wood Eucalyptus was carefully sourced a revolutionary carving technique employed. First the imagery was designed by computer, then the images projected & traced onto the wood. Next, the hand carving aided by a high tech tool saw the swift production of these testimonial monuments. Finally coated in a protective timber oil to ensure a several generation longevit.
